OLW 140 Borders
Posted: May 15, 2013 Filed under: CAS, Love is in the Air, OLW, Penny Black 15 Comments »This week’s One Layer Wednesday challenge is all about making or stamping a border on your one layer card. You can use stamps designed for creating a border or you can create a border with any stamps as I did for these two cards. I masked both cards with a post-it note and then stamped and sponged below the mask so the stamping became a border pattern. On the card above I embossed a few flowers in white first, stamped some more in red then sponged over all the flowers with yellow, orange and red. On the card below I just stamped the delicate poppy stamp three times and sponged a tiny bit to define the edge of the border. For this challenge I want the border to be the main event on the card. Border and sentiment that’s it, no more!
1. A one-layer card is defined as a single layer of card stock folded in half. No other layers of card stock allowed!
2. Make a card with a border as the image; you can add a sentiment but please remember to keep embellishments to a minimum.
3. Upload your card somewhere online and link it using the InLinkz button on the bottom of this post. If you link to your blog, please make sure the link goes to the individual post, not to your blog’s home page.
4.HAVE FUN! That’s really what it’s all about.

OLW 135 Tall and Thin
Posted: April 10, 2013 Filed under: Bliss, CAS, Irises, OLW 9 Comments »Time for a One Layer Wednesday challenge again and it’s all about the card shape this time. My daughter has made some tall and thin or low and wide cards lately which inspired me to choose it as a challenge. I decided to feature a flower but I did not have one with anywhere near a long enough stem so I either had to add some length by drawing it in or by combining two stamps. I chose to use the grass from another “brush stroke” style stamp for the added stem length. I inked the stamps with Memento markers and re-stamped twice to get the shadow flowers. My card is 7″ x 2¾” but you can choose whatever “tall and thin” size suits you.
OLW135 Rules
1. A one-layer card is defined as a single piece of card stock folded in half. No other layers allowed!!!
2. Make it tall and thin. Remember to keep embellishments to a minimum.
3. Post your card somewhere online and link to it using the InLinkz box on the sidebar of MASKerade. In your post, tell us how many threesomes you used in your card. If you link to your blog, please make sure it’s to the individual post and not your home page.
4. The most important rule of all: HAVE FUN!
Supplies:
Stamps: Bliss, Irises, Happy Birthday (PB)

OLW 132 Inspired by packaging
Posted: March 20, 2013 Filed under: Breezy, CAS, Kate's Alphabet, OLW, Winter Berries 13 Comments »Hopefully this challenge is not a hard one. So many products we buy are beautifully packaged; I am sure you will find inspiration all around your house. Some of the herbal teas I drink come in lovely boxes and I had planned to take inspiration from one of them but the brand I have right now is not so inspiring. After browsing the shower gels and shampoo bottles I settled instead on a tiny piece of packaging my daughter received with a gift a couple of days ago.
I like everything about this little card mount for a pair of earrings. The colours are restful, the layout is balanced and the sentiment bold, but not over powering. Packaging is great inspiration to try something you wouldn’t otherwise. I rarely use white on beige or ivory cardstock but is is very elegant. I would never have thought of adding a tiny bit of pink in the sentiment and nowhere else but it works.

OLW 128 Feminine Birthday Card
Posted: February 20, 2013 Filed under: Background Stamps, CAS, Glory of Modesty, OLW 29 Comments »This one should not be a difficult challenge. Most of us do birthday cards for females all the time. It’s those masculine cards that are the tricky ones. I made a card for my husband’s birthday last week which is yet unposted because half the small survey of people I showed it to did not understand what the scene was meant to be! Including my husband…
Remember to keep it one layer, and use a few of your favourite things on it; that’s what I did. I masked; you know I like to do that. I inked the background stamp with blue, my favourite colour. I added the letter background stamp that I love over the top and did a little sponging in both teal and yellow.

OLW 123 Keep Warm
Posted: January 16, 2013 Filed under: CAS, OLW 17 Comments »You would think that on the week that I host the One Layer Wednesday challenge I would not find it such a challenge, since I picked the theme! Not so, I really had to think this one through. The challenge is to have a warm theme to your card. The image can be something warm, or the colour scheme or perhaps the sentiment. In the dead of winter pick something to warm us up. If you happen to be playing along in the southern hemisphere I guess you won’t be short on warm inspiration.
I decided not to go for a warm colour scheme as my previous two cards were all about colour schemes so I looked for a warm image and didn’t find one. Nonetheless I persevered and created a little sweater mask and sponged myself a sweater, adding a border stamp to give it a little pattern and texture. Wouldn’t you know it, I did not have a stamp that said ‘warm wishes’ so I wrote it myself.
Warm Congratulations: Some of you might know Darnell of djkardkreations. She and her husband are celebrating their anniversary today so why don’t you pop over and give her some warm wishes. Have a wonderful day, Darnell. Edited to add: Ardyth is hosting an Anniversary Link party on her blog. I have added my wedding photo. see below

OLW 121 Simply Snowy
Posted: January 3, 2013 Filed under: CAS, OLW 12 Comments »
Susan is hosting the first One Layer Wednesday of 2013 and the challenge is to get inspiration from the Snowy Day post on the Cake Wrecks blog. After all the snowy cards I created before Christmas I decided to use a totally different method to create some little white snowflakes on a blue background. My inspiration is the cake below. I have an EK snowflake border punch which I used to punch tiny snowy flakes out of the sticky edge of a post-it note. Once arranged across my masked panel I sponged in Memento Summer Sky ink.
Check out the inspiration link; there is a wide variety of themed cakes to choose from.
Thanks for all the lovely comments you left on my last post. It seems that many of you have also seen sunsets over snow just like the one my husband and I saw. He agreed I had captured what we had seen as we finished our skiing so I was pretty happy with that comment too!
OLW 119 Silver & Blue
Posted: December 19, 2012 Filed under: Background Stamps, Butterfly Symphony, CAS, OLW 9 Comments »
For my challenge you could easily stay in the snow/snowflakes pattern set this month by Susan and Cheryl. I am challenging you to use silver and blue in your one layer card. I think when I planned this I intended to work with snowflakes but as I am having a little snowstorm obsession on the blog at present I decided to have one day off and use silver and blue for a different theme.
I have masked just under half the card base and stamped the music flourish and sentiment in versamark before embossing in silver powder. I then added the blue background stamp and sponging. The stamps are from the new Penny Black Valentine catalog and are in keeping with the gratitude theme happening on the PB blog this week.

OLW 117 Snow
Posted: December 9, 2012 Filed under: CAS, OLW, Penny Black, Winter Berries 19 Comments »
Susan’s challenge for One Layer Wednesday this week is to create snow on your card. My card uses my favourite method for making snow: masking fluid. I masked either side of the panel and then flicked the masking fluid onto the panel with a toothbrush. After it had dried I removed the masks and stamped the Winter Berries stamp as an overhanging branch rather than a tree. I inked it with black and red markers, stamped it once, then inked it with versamark and stamped it again before embossing with clear. For some reason a lot of the embossing powder stuck around the branches resulting in more snow than I expected from the flicked masking fluid. Not to worry; I have a berry branch in a snow storm. I replaced the masks and sponged the sky in two shades of Memento inks. I realize this is a layout and technique I have done several times before, but making it with a different stamp adds another card to my Christmas card stack.
Supplies:
Stamps: Winter Berries, All is Bright (PB)
Inks: Memento Summer Sky, Danube Blue, Lady Bug, Rhubarb Stalk,Tuxedo Black, Versamark(Tsukineko)
Also: clear embossing powder
OLW 115 Gift Tags
Posted: November 21, 2012 Filed under: Background Stamps, CAS, OLW, Penny Black 6 Comments »Sorry it’s been so quiet round here lately. I do have cards to post but have had very little blogging time. November is always concert month for my daughters and for the younger one that means a big fundraising concert with all hands on deck.
My challenge for One Layer Wednesday this week is not too hard at all. Make some one layer gift tags. Not too much of a stretch considering I usually make my very simple tags at the last minute! I have been wanting to use the nifty background stamp from Penny Black which is full of Christmas words and phrases so this was a perfect opportunity. I masked a third of the tag, stamped the text on an angle, added some sponging and punched out a star or a row of trees. Very simple indeed.

OLW 110 Squares
Posted: October 17, 2012 Filed under: CAS, Maidenhairs, OLW 10 Comments »Today’s One Layer Wednesday challenge is to incorporate squares into your card. You could use a square stamp, mask a square or create patterns with squares. It is up to you as long as squares feature somehow.
I decided to challenge myself to not sponge my squares: I thought I should think outside the box a little more than that. I have a little square acrylic block so I inked that up with two shades of green spritzed it with water then stamped it on my card. To add the maidenhair fern I used a punched mask which was exactly the same size as the acrylic block.
Can’t wait to see your creations!
